Abstract

[Also in Division B5] A retractile polyolefin wrapping material is made by initially stretching the material fully to the extent required for use for wrapping so as to impart orientation thereto and then subjecting the material to an ionising radiation such that the material receives an irradiation dosage of 1 to 5 megarads, preferably 1À5 to 3À5 megarads. The preferred polyolefin material is polyethylene. Articles may be wrapped in sheets of the polyolefin material so produced and the material heated to a temperature of 120‹ to 145‹ C. to release the pre-stresses therein and so cause the material to contract on to the article. In a preferred wrapping method, the article is wrapped in a sheet of wrapping material of the required size, and the edges of the sheet heat-sealed by bringing them together and welding them by the application of a heated member or wire. This can be adapted to produce the weld and to cut the edges of the sheet simultaneously. Sealing may also be carried out by any other known method used for the hot-welding of plastics, such as high-frequency hot welding. When the seal has been made, the wrapped article is placed into a device in which the wrapping material is heated to a temperature of 120‹ to 145‹ C., which relieves the internal stresses and causes the wrapping material to contract and tighten on to the article.
