Hydraulic transmission fluid comprises at least one fully esterified ester, of a saturated aliphatic carboxylic acid and of an alcohol, each having at least 5 carbon atoms and either the acid or the alcohol, but not both, being mono-functional with respect to carboxy and hydroxy groups respectively, and 0À5-5 wt. per cent of an anti-oxidant association comprising N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine and an arylamine selected from diphenylamine and its derivatives, e.g. diphenylmethylamine and alpha-naphthylamine. Suitable esters are made by reacting a monocarboxylic acid with a di-, tri- or polyhydric alcohol or a di- or polycarboxylic acid with a monohydric alcohol having a branched chain. The fluid may also include 0À5-5% of a chlorinated, phosphorated, or sulphurated organic compound, e.g. tricresyl-, tridichloropropyl-, or trichloroethyl phosphate, as an anti-wear component, up to 10% of a specifically lubricating component selected from polymethacrylates, polypropylenes, polyethylenes, polyisobutylenes and lubricating polyesters, and 0À05-1% of benzotriazole as a copper surface passivator.
