Abstract
1,189,510. Travelling-wave tubes. SIEMENS A.G. 7 Nov., 1967 [8 Nov., 1966], No. 50557/67. Heading H1D. In a travelling-wave tube having a slow wave helix coaxially surrounded by a cylindrical electrode 10, a hollow rotating electron beam 19 is projected into the gap between them, the electrode is held negative with respect to the helix to provide electrostatic centrifugal focusing of the electron beam, and where a is the radius of the helix and # v is the wavelength, in the axial direction, of the signal applied to the helix. As shown, the helix is mounted on a ceramic tube 2 supported at its ends by the outer conductors 3, 4 of the input and output coaxial lines, and is coupled to the latter by the tapered helices 6, 7. The hollow, rotating beam is produced by a " Harris flow " arrangement of annular cathode 11, modulating electrodes 12 and 13, anode 14, and cylindrical magnet 18 providing an adjustable localized field in the vicinity of the gun. The decelerating electrode 20, held at cathode potential, both deflects the beam on to the electrode 10 which acts as a depressed-potential collector, and also directs back to the electrode 10 secondary electrons produced by impact of the beam thereon.
