Abstract

1,189,426. Rotatable stud-and-socket fastening. ENGLISH STEEL CORP. Ltd. 3 March, 1969 [9 March, 1968], No. 11640/68. Heading E2B. The fastening head 13 of a twist-lock unit for securing freight containers on to vehicles is completely retractable to leave a flush surface, and is controlled by a lever 8 moving in an L-shaped slot having a horizontal portion 9A for the rotational movement of the head and a vertical portion 9B for its retraction. The body 1 of the fastener is bolted by holes, not shown, to the side of the vehicle, the upper surface 5 being flush with the vehicle platform. The handle 8 is screwed at 10, 11 into the shaft 12 of the fastening element 13. This shaft is carried in a sleeve 15 which is axially slideable in part 3 of the body 1 but is prevented from rotating by a key 17. The handle carries a spring-loaded sleeve 24 which engages in holes 26, 28 in the body to index it in the fastening or releasing position, the sleeve being released by handle 27. In the releasing position, flange 21 rests on a shoulder on guide 4 in the body to support the fastening head. In the fastening position, flange 22 extends under the edge of guide 4 to hold the fastening head down, but in this position it may be retracted manually or by gravity.
