Abstract

1,189,319. Brakes. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. 20 Sept., 1968 [31 Oct., 1967], No. 49470/67. Heading F2E. An automatic slack adjuster of the type having a worm and worm-wheel includes a oneway clutch device 12 surrounding a shaft 5 rigid with the worm 4, the device 12 being rotatable relative to the shaft 5 in one direction of rotation, clutched to the shaft 5 in the other direction and looked against rotation when the brake is applied. The worm 4 and shaft 5 are urged in the direction in which a lever 1 is moved to apply the brakes, i.e. clockwise as seen in Fig. 2, by belleville washers 6. As the lever 1 is rotated to apply the brake, the device 12 which is provided with teeth moves a rack 20 slidable on a member 21 to take up a lostmotion Y which corresponds to the normal brake clearance, the member 21 being spring urged against a stop 23. As the lever is rotated further the reaction on worm 4 is sufficient to overcome the force of the washers 6 so as to clamp the device 12 between the worm 4 and a shoulder 17 on the lever 1. Should there be an excessive brake clearance is when the lost motion Y is taken up the brake is not yet applied, as the lever 1 is rotated further the device 12, not having been, clamped, is rotated relative to the shaft 5 in one direction by its movement relative to the rack 20, which is held stationary with the member 21 by a spring 22, to measure the excessive clearance until the brakes are applied to clamp the device 12. Upon release of the brake the device 12 is rotated in the other direction so as to clutch the shaft 5 to rotate the worm 4 in a direction to cause the worm-wheel 3 to close the brake clearance. The one-way clutching of the device 12 may be provided by faces (13) on the radially inner surface of the device 12 which faces each constitute one of a pair of relatively inclined faces with the outer surface of shaft 5, and a roller (14) situated between each of these pairs of faces, Fig. 1 (not shown). The slack may be adjusted manually by a nut 30.
