Abstract
1,188,321. Ammonium phosphate. POWERGAS CORP. Ltd. 12 July, 1967 [23 July, 1966], No. 33238/66. Heading C1A. In a process for producing phosphonitrogenous fertilizers, phosphate rock is acidulated with nitric acid to form a slurry containing unreacted phosphate rock, this is reacted with sulphuric acid so that substantially all the P 2 O 5 initially present is converted to H 3 PO 4 , CaSO 4 also being formed, adding sufficient (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 to convert the calcium in solution into CaSO 4 , removing the CaSO 4 from the reaction product, withdrawing the reaction product and neutralizing it with ammonia so that free phosphoric acid is converted to ammonium phosphate. The reactions with sulphuric acid and ammonium sulphate are preferably carried out at 60‹ .to 90‹ C. When the ammonium phosphate is monoammonium phosphate a potassium salt or potassium hydroxide may be added to the product solution to convert all or a part of the mono-ammonium phosphate into diammonium phosphate and.potassium hydrogen phosphate. Some of the calcium sulphate produced may be converted to calcium carbonate by reaction with carbon dioxide and ammonia, the ammonium sulphate solution produced being used in the process. An example of the process is given.
