Abstract

1,188,301. Cigarette-making machines. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. and R. E. M. GEMMELL. 19 July, 1967 [20 July, 1966], No. 32503/66. Heading A2C. An apparatus for assembling groups of axially aligned rod elements, each group consisting of a central element of one kind such as a double length cigarette 4 and two end elements of another kind such as single length mouthpieces 10, comprises a rotating assembly drum 13 having an odd number of flutes 12 during the first revolution of which drum 13 a mouthpiece 10 is fed from a deflector disc 11 into each successive flute 12 and a double length cigarette 4 is fed to each alternate flute 12, said alternate flute not registering with intermediate non-transferring flutes 14a of a transfer drum 15, and during the second revolution of the drum 13 mouthpieces 10 are again fed into each successive flute 12 and double cigarettes 4 are fed into the alternate flutes 12 not thus filled during the first revolution, the alternate flutes 12 filled with a mouthpiece 10 and a cigarette 4 during the first revolution now contain a complete assembly of a cigarette 4 between two mouthpieces 10 and on this second revolution register with alternate flutes 14 of the drum 15 that are provided with suction ports to effect transfer of the assemblies thereto. The assemblies are then united and bisected in conventional manner. As described the apparatus is used for uniting paper tube mouthpieces to double length cigarettes, both being fed directly from the cut-offs of continuous rod making machines. The apparatus may also be used for forming united assemblies of cigarettes with filter elements, or for forming composite filters.
