Abstract
1,187,976. Cutting by blasting. PLESSEY B.T.R. Ltd. 28 July, 1967 [4 July, 1966], No. 30015/66. Heading B3D. A method of cutting a recess of substantially rectangular cross-section in a block of material having a top layer and a backing layer formed from a material which is more resistant to abrasion than the material of the top layer comprises the steps of (i) covering the surface of the block opposite to the backing layer with a mask of elastomeric material having an aperture shaped in accordance with the required plan of the recess, and (ii) cutting through the top layer to the backing layer around the periphery of the required recess using an abrasive jet. In making a fluidic element, either in a form ready for use or to serve as a mould from which elements of a different material can be produced in quantity, a block 2 has a top layer 8, the thickness of which is equal to the desired depth of the recess and of a material suitable for erosion by an abrasive jet, and a lower layer 9 of a material resistant to an abrasive jet and to etching fluid. A mask 3 of elastomeric material is used and the tool is mounted on an engraving, contour milling or similar machine, so that the jet 4 produces a channel 5 defining the edges of the openings. The channel, which extends completely through the top layer 8 is filled with a resist and the material 6, 7 removed to the same depth by etching. The mask may be applied by a printing process.
