Abstract

1,187,280. Supply circuits for electric discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC & ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANIES Ltd. 19 Sept., 1968 [6 Oct., 1967], No. 45867/67. Heading H2H. A discharge lamp 7, operated from an A.C. supply via a rectifier-capacitor bridge circuit 3, 4, 5, 6 delivering unidirectional current pulses, is characterized by a conducting coating 10 on the lamp envelope 9, the coating being in series with the lamp discharge and serving to broaden the current pulses. The voltage doubling circuit 3, 4, 5, 6 comprises semi-conductor diodes and capacitors of paper or electrolytic type poled for A.C. operation. The circuit 3, 4, 5, 6 is replaceable by a full-wave rectifiercapacitor circuit incorporating four rectifiers 14, 15, 16, 17 and a single capacitor 18, Fig. 2 (not shown), or two capacitors 19, 20 in series, Fig. 3 (not shown). The coating 10 is lighttransmissive and is a film of gold or tin oxide, its resistance being graded along the lamp length so that it is greatest nearest the cathode. The -electrodes can be shunted by a starting switch of the glow discharge or thermally operated bimetal type for pre-heating the lamp electrodes and facilitating starting of the discharge. The electrodes may be of the heatable thermionic type used in fluorescent lamps, e.g. low pressure mercury vapour lamps.
