1,187,167. N-substituted maleimides. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 9 Sept., 1968 [9 Sept., 1967], No. 42805/68. Addition to 1,174,514. Heading C2C. A process for the production of N-substituted maleimides comprises heating a corresponding primary amine salt of maleic acid in an aqueous solution or in the solid state, with or without a dehydrating agent, in the presence of an inert diluting gas (which in the examples is super-heated steam), to a temperature between 100‹ and 400‹ C., and separating the corresponding N-substituted maleimide from the hot reaction mixture in a highly pure state by the injection of water. In the examples N-cyclohexyl, N-tertiary butyl, N-ethyl, N-phenyl, and N-(9,10-dihydro- 9,10 - ethano - anthryl - (11) - methyl) maleimides are prepared by the above process.
