Abstract

[Also in Divisions C1 and H1] An electric discharge lamp comprises a fused silica envelope including having a transparent protective coating on the envelope interior consisting of aluminium oxide or boric oxide which has penetrated at least partially into the silica surface. The coating may be formed by heating the envelope surface to 800 to 1200‹C while exposed to a moisture free aluminium or boron halide vapour, alone or with hydrogen, or to a boron hydride vapour, the subsequent aluminium or boron deposition on the envelope surface producing discolouration thereof. The surface may then be heated in an oxidising atmosphere (e.g. air, oxygen or water vapour-inert gas (e.g. Ar) or N 2 mixture) to at least 800‹C until the discolouration is removed. The Al may be liberated from the vapour due to disproportionation (of aluminium monobromide for example), due to thermal dissociation (e.g. dissociation of boron halide, aluminium monobromide and boron tribromide at 1000‹C and boron from diborase vapour at 500‹C) or due to reduction (e.g. aluminium or boron trihalide with hydrogen).
