The feed of flock to carding engine is automatically regulated in dependence on the non-uniformity of the sliver produced by the engine, by introducing a predetermined length of the sliver into a can, weighing the can, and altering the feed of flock in accordance with the deviation of the weight of the sliver filled can from a set weight. The quantity of flock fed to the engine may be varied by varying the width of a hopper of rectangular crosssection (Fig. 2), by varying the density of the flock, or by varying the compacting of the flocks in a hopper (Fig. 4). The side 21 (Fig. 2) of the hopper 2 is pivoted and movably controlled by a rack 23 and meshing gear 24 which is driven by an electric motor. The motor is controlled by device 16a which is supplied with current pulses from line 15 which leads from weighing device 14 (Fig. 1) which serves a plurality of carding engines 1a-d. The hopper 33 of Fig. 4 has a diaphragm part 43 movable by means of tongue 45 and counter tongue, which are both connected in the circuit of a control device 35 of the motor 35 of the drawing-in cylinder 31, tongue 46 also being connected to device 16a connected to lead 15.
