Abstract
1,186,857. Acoustic measurement of temperature; ultrasonic couplings. STEEL CO. OF WALES Ltd. 21 March, 1968 [31 March, 1967], No. 54131/66. Headings H4D and H4J. The temperature of a medium is determined from the propagation time of an ultrasonic wave transmitted through the medium. For measuring the temperature of a specimen 10, e.g. a steel bar on a rolling table or a slab in a re-heat furnace a pair of transducers 30 are coupled to the specimen by extension bars 14, 15 in watercooling jackets 17. Studs 25 enable bars 14, 15 to be urged against the specimen 10. A material which softens but does not melt (e.g. grease) may be used as couplant between the bars and the specimen. The propagation time in the extension bars 14, 15 is determined by a pulseecho method using one of the transducers 30 and an oscilloscope: the propagation time in the bars plus the specimen is determined by a through-transmission method using both transducers and the oscilloscope. From these determinations the specimen temperature can be calculated.
