Abstract
1,186,245. Coated perlite particles. BP CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 18 Nov., 1968 [22 Nov., 1967], No. 53083/67 , Heading B2K. A coated filler for extending polymeric materials comprises expanded perlite particles, which in the uncoated state has a bulk density of less than 20 pounds per cubic foot, coated with a set water-soluble silicate, i.e. a water soluble silicate that has dried and hardened under the action of carbon dioxide or carbon dioxide-containing gases such as air. The average particle size of the expanded perlite may be not greater than 6 mm. The coating may be of a mixture of a water-soluble silicate e.g. sodium silicate and chalk powder; the powder may be present from 0.1 to 10% by wt of the silicate. The coating solution may be sprayed into or onto an agitated mass of expanded perlite particles and may be carried out in the presence of gaseous carbon dioxide. The chalk powder is incorporated into the silicate solution before coating takes place.
