Abstract

1,186,121. Cylinder attachments for inflating tyres. I. SHIMAZAKI. March 1, 1968, No.10216/68. Heading F1B. An adaptor for utilizing an engine to supply compressed air, e.g. for pumping up tyres, comprises a body 1 with a chamber 4 containing a petrol vapour absorbent, an inlet valve 2 for admitting air on the induction stroke of the engine cylinder, and a non-return valve preventing back flow from the chamber 4. The body 1 is screwed, either directly or through an extension tube 13, into the cylinder spark plug hole or a hole specially provided. On the induction stroke combustible mixture, drawn into the cylinder through its normal admission valve, is diluted by air drawn in through valve 2. On the compression stroke, the diluted mixture is forced through chamber 4, where the petrol vapour is removed, to provide a supply of compressed air at the outlet 11. The absorbent may be activated carbon, silica gel, or activated alumina and a baffle arrangement 7 provides a tortuous flow path through the absorbent. A detector 10, containing ammonium molybdate with palladium sulphate, indicates when the absorbent is exhausted.
