Abstract
1,185,683. Forging; extruding. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 17 May, 1967 [31 May, 1966], No. 22863/67. Headings B3H and B3P. A billet 10, enclosed in a sheath 11, Fig. 7, is compressed so as to deform its ends 17, 18, end pieces 19, 20 are then attached to the billet, and the assembly is extruded. The starting billet is compressed in a chamber 15, Fig. 10, containing a fluid substance which exerts a back pressure on the sheathed billet. The chamber is closed at one end by a plug 13 with vent apertures 24 and pressure is exerted by a piston 16 having a vent aperture 24. The fluid substance in chamber 15 may be a ductile metal such as lead, aluminium, copper or copper/ nickel alloy, or a plastic material or a liquid. During forging to produce end surfaces 17, 18 this substance escapes through the vent apertures to provide the back pressure. End plugs 19, 20 of the same metal as the sheath are then welded to the billet and the assembly is extruded into a rod, Fig. 9 (not shown). In another embodiment, Figs. 11-16 (not shown), for forming a sheathed tube, the billet is partially pierced by a nose (21) on piston 16. The billet 1 may be of austenitic or ferritic steel; zirconium; titanium; alloys of titanium with aluminium, vanadium, zirconium, molybdenum and columbium; uranium or plutonium in a metal matrix; refractory cermets. The sheath may be of copper or mild steel.
