Abstract

1,185,352. Laminated wall panel. LORD CORP. 23 March, 1967 [25 April, 1966], No. 13746/67. Heading B5N. A panel for blocking the transmission of sound in the band of frequencies required for the transmission of intelligible speech has its critical frequency for bending waves, as determined by the equation (where a is the speed of sound in air in in./sec., m is the mass of the panel per unit area in lb. sec.<SP>2</SP>/ in. 3 and B is the bending stiffness per unit area in lb. in.<SP>3</SP>/in.<SP>2</SP>), less than the band of frequencies required for the transmission of intelligible speech, and has a loss factor in directions normal to the surfaces of the panel at least 0À1 for frequencies above its critical frequency. As described the fundamental resonance frequency f n of the panel is arranged to be less than the critical frequency. In one embodiment the panel comprises outer skins of aluminium, steel, titanium, magnesium, beryllium or molybdenum or glass-fibre-reinforced plastics and a honeycomb core of extensional damping material. In other embodiments of panel comprising spaced skins 12, 13 projections 10 from skin 12 are joined to projections 11 from skin 13 via a layer 14 of a viscoelastic damping material such as butyl rubber, vinyl plastics or asphalt. The projections may be circular or hexagonal section tubes, or flat or angled plates.
