118,522. Hiller, H. K. Nov. 20, 1917. Materials for making gas.-A gas suitable for use in containers or motor-vehicles &c., and consisting mainly of methane, is obtained by distilling at a temperature not exceeding 500‹ C. bastard cannel coal, lignite, wood, peat, shale, &c., in an horizontal or vertical retort, through which the material is continuously fed in a thin layer or column by means of a screw conveyer or the like.
