A polyamide consists, at least mainly, of recurring structural units where R is H or an alkyl radical having less than 6 carbon atoms, the radicals R<SP>1</SP>, which can be the same or different, are non-amide-forming radicals e.g. alkyl, alkoxy or halogen radicals, n is 0 to 4 and Ar is a radical in which each of the two free valencies belongs to a carbon atom forming part of a benzene ring, preferably a substituted or unsubstituted 1,3- or 1,4- phenylene radical, or a radical of the formula where R<SP>1</SP> and n are as defined above, and X is alkylene, cycloalkylene, cycloalkylidene, -SO 2 -, -O-, -CO-, (Y and Y<SP>1</SP> being alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radicals which are the same or different, and R<SP>11</SP> being alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl), or a radical comprising in the chain, one or more amide, ester, sulphamide or ether functions. The polyamides are preferably prepared by reacting a 1,1-bis-(4- amino-phenyl)-1-phenylalkanewith an aromatic di-carboxylic acid, or preferably an amide forming derivative, especially a di-acid halide, of the acid. They are soluble in m-cresol, dimethyl formamide, acetamide or sulphoxide, and N- methyl pyrrolidone.
