1,184,494. Production of benzyl ester. B.P. CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 30 May, 1968 [3 Aug., 1967], No. 35600/67. Heading C2C. Benzyl esters of aliphatic carboxylic acid having at least two carbon atoms are prepared by reacting toluene with an alkali metal salt of the carboxylic acid and a palladous salt in aqueous solution. In the examples toluene, palladous chloride, sodium acetate and water are heated under reflux then cooled and filtered to remove palladium metal. Ester is extracted from the filtrate by ether.
