Abstract
1,184,427. Electric arc gas heaters. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 15 March, 1967 [16 March, 1966], No. 12106/67. Heading H5H. In an electric arc gas heater comprising a cylindrical chamber 16, a nozzle anode 10 at one end of the chamber and a button cathode 18 at the other end of the chamber, gas to be heated is introduced to said chamber via inlets 24 in the anode which are arranged to impart a swirling gas flow in the chamber. The nozzle anode 10 has a constricting orifice 11 for increasing arc chamber pressure. The gas is stated to swirl along the inner surface of the chamber until it strikes the end wall 19 whereupon the flow reverses and swirls toward and through the nozzle anode in an area close to and surrounding the arc 20. The copper body 12 and anode 10 are water cooled. If an oxidizing gas is being heated the cathode 18 is made of zirconium, lanthanum, thorium or strontium. With an inert gas, e.g. argon, the oxide of the metal forms the cathode. Also a thoria-containing tungsten button may be used with inert gas. The anode may be of copper with a tungsten insert when using inert gas.
