Abstract
1,184,101. Positive clutches. H. HAGENMEYER, [trading as GETRAG GETRIEBEUND ZAHNRADFABRIK HERMANN HAGENMEYER]. 23 Feb., 1967 [24 Feb., 1966], No. 8728/67. Heading F2C. In a split ring synchronizer, for a dog clutch 6, 7 of a motor vehicle change-speed gear, comprising a friction ring 9 with a slot opening, a spreader ring 110 within the friction ring to increase the self-servo action of the latter and having an external lug 114 engaging the friction ring slot and an internal lug 117 engaging a slot in a hub 4<SP>1</SP> secured to a pinion 4 and supporting the synchronizer and the dogs 6, the subtended angle at the axis of rotation of the synchronizer between the lugs 114, 117 is between 30 and 150 degrees. As shown, when the axially slidable clutch sleeve 7 is rotated in direction D relative to the hub 4<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 3), a roller 120<SP>1</SP> in a V-slot 119 between the ends of the spreader rings 110 is urged radially outwards to press the free end 9<SP>1</SP> of the friction ring more firmly against the sleeve 7. The upper limiting angle of 150 degrees between the lugs is determined as 180 degrees minus the sum of the friction angles between the materials of which the lugs 114, 117 and the parts co-operating with them are made, to prevent self-locking of the synchronizer once the dog clutch has engaged. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the roller is dispensed with, and a portion of the spreader ring outer surface is pressed directly against the inner surface of the free end of the friction ring during synchronization. Here, the spreader rings (10) may be unbroken, or may have a radial or inclined sawcut (10<SP>1</SP> or 10<SP>11</SP>) therethrough in the section between the two lugs. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 769,838.
