Abstract

1,184,054. Thermographic materials. GEVAERT-AGFA N. V. March 6, 1967 [April 5, 1966], No. 15147/66. Heading G2C. A thermographic material comprises a support, a water-permeable hydrophilic interlayer and a water-impermeable hydrophobic layer containing a hydrophobic meltable substance so that on heating, the substance melts and diffuses into the interlayer which still retaines its water-permeablility. Specified substances are waxes (carnauba, ouricury, candelilla, sugar cane, azokerite, montan, Utah, bees, shellac, chinese insect, paraffin, spermacetic, wool and "IG" waxes being specified), fatty acids and their metal salts, fatty alcohols, ethers, esters and ketones, paraffins, terpenes, biphenyl, camphene, camphace and camphor. After imagewise exposure to heat, the materials may be developed by applying an aqueous dye solution which dyes the melted areas to produce a positive image. The hydrophobic layer may contain a pigment such as carbon black and be flash exposed as in Specification 1, 160, 121. Alternatively, a dye may be added to the hydrophilic layer and the material may be used as a hectographic master.
