Abstract

1,184,030. Underwater pipes. F. FULLER. 9 Oct., 1968, No. 47758/68. Heading F2P. An underwater pipeline 17 comprises a plurality of steel tubes 14 welded together either by a number of intermediate rods 11, as shown, or by an interconnecting large diameter tube (20, Fig. 3, not shown) and encased in asphalt material 19 so as to form a structure which is buoyant when the tubes 14 contain only air, but which sinks when the tubes 14 are filled with a liquid to be conveyed, pigs (21, Fig. 4, not shown) being inserted in the tubes 14 in longitudinally spaced pairs trapping between each pair a volume of air or other gaseous fluid, whereby when further liquid under pressure is supplied to the tubes 14 the trapped gas will move to a desired portion of the pipeline where inspection is required, causing such portion to become buoyant and rise to the surface of the water. The pipeline may be laid by equipment carried by two barges one of which contains reels of rodding 11 while the other contains lengths of tube 14, welding equipment and asphalt coating equipment. Supplies of fuel for the welding equipment may be replenished via one or more of the tubes 14.
