Abstract

1,184,015. Evaporators, film type. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 23 May, 1968, No. 24741/68. Heading B1B. Liquid is evaporated by passing it through one or more externally-heated tubes the walls of which are impressed with helical indentations of diminishing depth in the direction of liquid-flow, whereby swirling motion is imparted to the liquid and evolved vapour, and the liquid flows over the hot internal walls of the tube(s) in the form of a thin layer. The tube shown, which has three helical indentations, is suitable for an evaporator of the downflow type. The indentations may be pressed from without into a normal cylindrical tube, so that the internal cross-section of the tube gradually increases in the direction of liquid-flow, although the periphery remains constant. The increase in crosssection is preferably so determined that the vapour velocity through the length of the tube is constant. Tubes with helical indentations may be employed in an evaporator of the upflow type, or they may be arranged horizontally, or in an inclined position.
