Abstract

1,183,432. Control systems for electrostatic precipitators. GOLD FIELDS MINING & INDUSTRIAL Ltd. 2 April, 1968 [2 May, 1967], No. 15774/68. Heading H2H. In order to maintain the operation of an electrostatic precipitator in an optimum condition the electrodes thereof are periodically vibrated to remove the accumulations of particles thereon, the intensity of vibration being made responsive to the power input to the precipitator. An electrostatic precipitator 14, provided with emitter and collector electrodes 16, 18 respectively, is supplied from an A.C. supply 10 by way of a transformerrectifier unit 12. To remove the particles, the emitter and collector are provided with vibrators 20, 24 respectively, the operations of which are controlled by thyristor devices 60E, 60C, each of which is energized from power sources 58E, 58C for predetermined time intervals by means of timers 62E, 62C. A signal representing the input power to the precipitator is derived by means of a current transformer 32, rectified and filtered by units 34. 36 respectively. The signal thus obtained is amplified by amplifiers 40E, 40C, and provides energization for windings 52E, 52C of magnetic amplifiers 50E, 50C, these amplifiers further being provided with bias windings 54E, 54C. The outputs of the magnetic amplifiers are used to gate the thyristor devices and so control the intensity of vibration of the emitter and collector electrodes. The windings 52E and 54E are arranged to oppose one another whilst the windings 52C and 54C assist each other. Thus the intensity of vibration of the emitter is inversely proportional to the input power to the precipitator whilst that of the collector is directly proportional thereto. The control systems are each provided with limit and gain controls whereby to limit the intensity of vibration of the electrodes and to control the rate of change of such intensity with given changes in input power to the precipitator.
