Abstract

1,182,893. Making pipes. KLOCKNERWERKE A.G. 4 June, 1968 [10 June, 1967], No. 26595/68. Heading F2P. In a process for making glass fibre-reinforced tube wherein glass fibre yarns 5, which have an electrically conductive surface, are first applied axially of a mandrel and then glass fibre yarns are helically wound about the axiallyextending yarns, a mixture of synthetic plastics or resinous material and hardener is applied by an electrostatic spray unit 9 to the axiallyextending yarns prior to applying the helicallywound yarns. The yarns 5 are drawn from spools 6, pass through braking and tensioning rollers 7, and distributed around the periphery of an axially-moving mandrel 1 by a guide and distributer ring 8. Downstream of the distributer ring and upstream of a rotating winding machine applying the helically wound yarns, the axially-extending yarns pass through the spray unit 9 comprising four spray bells 11 arranged circumferentially of the mandrel. Two pumps 12 feed synthetic plastics or resinous material and a hardener through separate conduits 13, 24 to each bell which produces a finely atomized and electrically charged mixture. The mandrel, which may be of plastics material, is axially moved by a chain-driven carriage 2, 3. After passage through the winding machine, the tube is cured in an oven. The axially-extending glass fibre yarns may be metallized to provide an electrically conductive surface.
