Abstract
1,182,762. Piezo-electric unit. BRUSH CLEVITE CO. Ltd. 14 Feb., 1969 [16 Feb., 1968], No. 7850/68. Heading B5A. A piezo-electric unit for a spark-igniter comprising at least one piezo-element element, and two metal end caps one at each end having electrical connections to the spark-gap from the terminal and an end cap is mounted in an insulating casing of a thermoplastics material which shrinks on setting, e.g. nylon by providing each end cap with a surface facing away from the element to form a purchase for the material to grip the end cap and urge it by shrinkage, axially toward the element. The unit may comprise only one ceramic element having end caps which form the terminals, or two elements arranged end-to-end with a terminal member therebetween and end caps at the outer ends of the elements. The end cap surfaces may be provided by the sides of peripheral grooves or the inclined shoulders of the cap, the material setting around the edges of the end faces leaving the centres free. The components may be located and held together in a jig and the assembly so held transferred to the mould. Moulding may be by injection. Preferred materials are nylon 610 and nylon 12.
