Abstract

1,182,092. Cam followers. BRITISH MOTOR CORP. Ltd. 7 Nov., 1968 [25 Jan., 1968], No. 3855/68. Heading F2K. In a valve operating mechanism for an internal combustion engine, a tappet 1 has a diametric bore 3 housing a shim pin 8 which is tapered at one end 10 and has a central recess 11 engaged by the end of a valve stem 7. To adjust the valve clearance the shim pin 8 is removed using a drift pin and replaced by another shim pin 8 having a recess 11 of different depth. The ends of the pin 8, valve stem 7 and recess 11 are chamfered.
