Abstract

1,181,073. Tyre-building drums. N.R.M. CORP. 20 Feb., 1967 [25 Feb., 1966], No. 7978/67. Heading B7C. A tyre-building drum comprises a flexible support surface 9 convertible from cylindrical to toroidal shape, non-yielding, shape-forming members 10 supporting said surface in the drum centre in both cylindrical and toroidal shapes, the drum ends 5, 8, 16, 17 and 5a, 8a, 16a, 17a being movable towards each other in synchronism with radial outward movement of the members 10. Annular coil springs 42 extend around the surface 9 and are covered with elastic layer 11 fixed at the drum ends. Circumferentially-spaced members 10 are each supported on links 14, 15 pivoted to sleeves 12, 12a engaging screw 2. Brackets 5, 5a carrying the other parts of the drum ends also engage screw 2. The hand and pitch of the threads on the screw are arranged to provide the synchronism when the screw is rotated. With the drum in its toroidal shape, pistons 24, 24a are moved by fluid pressure to pivot levers 22, 22a and hence leaf-springs 19, 19a to apply the side-wall layers to the shaped carcass.
