Abstract
1,180,836. Stabilization of epoxides. ARGUS CHEMICAL CORP. 21 March, 1967 [4 April, 1966], No. 13193/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] Liquid epoxide compositions having improved resistance to discoloration and gelation and not curable by heating to 350‹ F., consist essentially of a liquid epoxide, containing only internal epoxy group and having a tendency to discolour and/or gel, and a stabilizing amount, insufficient to cure or polymerize the epoxide, of at least one organic phosphite ester containing at least two organic groups of 1-30 carbon atoms linked through oxygen to each phosphorus atom. The term "consisting essentially of" is defined as excluding from the compositions polyvinyl chloride resins and stabilizers for such resins, except the present phosphites. The compositions may include other inert diluents and solvents. Many epoxides which are stabilized by the organic phosphites are listed, in particular, epoxidized natural oils, epoxidized synthetic mono- and polyesters and olefins. A large number of suitable phosphites are named and fall with the general formula wherein R 1 is an organic group or hydrogen and R 2 and R 3 are organic groups. The radicals R are preferably aliphatic but may include additional phosphite groups or 2 or all of the radicals R may be joined to form a heterocyclic ring including the phosphite group. The amount of phosphite used is generally in the range 0À01-10% by wt. of epoxide, preferably 0À05-3%. Examples describe compositions based on epoxidized oils, particularly epoxidized soybean oil, and synthetic esters.
