Abstract
1,179,677. Surgical dressings. B. L. STEEL. 30 May, 1968, No. 25925/68. Heading ASR. Sterile surgical dressings which are particularly suitable for treating corns, bunions, callouses &c comprise a flexible base having an obverse side and a reverse side, a sterile pad sized to cover an area of the body of selected size secured to the obverse side of the base, the base defining a pair of tabs extending in opposite directions along the length of the base away from the sterile pad, at least one protective pad fabricated of a deformable material having limited compressibility mounted to the base adjacent the sterile pad for protecting a body area overlaid by the sterile pad from pressure, a layer of adhesive material disposed over the obverse side of the base at least adjacent the sterile pad, protective sheet means releasably adhered to the adhesive material over the extent of said material, and a sealed package housing the above-mentioned components of the dressing in a condition of sterility until use of the dressing. Various embodiments of the dressings are illustrated, one typical example being shown in Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 1 is an enlarged cross-sectional elevation view of a dressing assembly and Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the Fig. 1 dressing removed from its sealed package. The dressing assembly 10 includes a sealed package 11, preferably made of paper, enclosing a dressing 12 which comprises a strip-like base 13 made of an elastic material which can be deformed for application to a foot or alternatively if desired, made of an inelastic fabric or synthetic film. A soft pad 14, preferably made of gauze, is mounted centrally to the base, with the sterile pad of dressing 12 being mounted to obverse side 15 of the base. The sterile pad is preferably adhered to a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive 16 covering the entire obverse surface. Other components of the dressing are tabs 17, protective backing strips 18, and pressure-relieving protective pads 19 secured to reverse side 20 of the base at tabs 17, the pads being made of dense felt. In another embodiment, the pressure-relieving pads are covered by a sheet, preferably of the same material as the base, and when this material is a synthetic film both the cover sheet and base are preferably perforated.
