Abstract

1,179,676. Cutting cigar wrappers. ARENCO A.B. 30 May, 1968 [9 June, 1967], No. 25913/68. Heading A2C. An apparatus for cutting a cigar wrapper composed of two or more leaf portions positioned in a predetermined, mutual orientation, which apparatus is provided with a number of cutting dies movable in a closed path past leaf applying, cutting and delivery stations, is characterized in that the cutting dies comprise at least one group of two or more cutting dies 6, 7, each die in a group designed to cut its respective leaf portion and arranged one after the other in the direction of movement of the dies, and that a leaf portion collecting means is arranged to receive in succession at the delivery station the two or more leaf portions intended to form a wrapper, receiving them in a position relative to the cutting dies which is determined by the predetermined, mutual orientation of the said leaf portions. A horizontal rotor 5 carries two groups of two cutting dies 6, 7 on each of which, in turn, a tobacco leaf is placed and held by suction and, after rotation of the rotor through 90 degrees, is cut by rolls (16) mounted on a reciprocable carriage 15. On a further 90 degrees rotation of the rotor 5, the cut leaf (i.e. half wrapper) is deposted on one of four suction heads 13 mounted by arms 12 and vertical rods 11 on a vertical rotor 8. The rotor 8 is rotated through 90 degrees on every two such rotations of the rotor 5, thus two complementary half wrappers are deposited on each head 13 in turn. An applicator 24 applies adhesive to the edge to be joined of the first half wrapper before the second half wrapper is deposited thereon. After rotating through 180 degrees, each head 13 carrying a joined wrapper is raised and the wrapper is picked up by a suction carrier 27 for transfer to an adjacent cigar wrapping machine. In another embodiment, the dies 6, 7 are mounted on a vertical rotor 5 and the suction heads 13 are mounted on a horizontal rotor 8, transfer of the cut leaf portions being effected by raising plungers 19 within the dies 6, 7.
