Abstract

1,178,571. Bag - emptying machine. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 4 April, 1968 [11 April, 1967], No. 16474/67. Heading B8C. In a bag-emptying machine, the bag is conveyed to holding means for its extremities of which each has at least one pair of cooperating endless belts or the like, located adjacent a trap door, which engage the bag extremities to move it over the trap door where it is cut in half in the direction of its travel. The trap door is opened to empty the bag, the halves of which remain held by belts &c. and is closed to receive the next bag. A bag flattener compresses the bag 2 as it is moved to the holding belts 6, 6a. These are fixed on both sides of doors 4a, 4b, spikes 7 on the lower belts 6a projecting through slots in the doors to co-operate with further spikes on belt 6 to grip the bag. A rotary cutter 5 projecting downwardly into a gap between the doors slices the bag in half, whereupon the belts 6, 6a stop and the doors 4a, 4b are opened to empty the bag contents into a hopper. The empty halves are disengaged from the spikes by a guiding finger (not shown) and pushed between conveyer belts 8, 8a. The doors then close to receive the next bag. The spikes may be spring-loaded to accommodate different sized bags.
