Fluid-actuated valves; check valves.-A device for supplying an engine with mixed air and gas comprises a gas chamber 1 fitted with a nozzle 2 supplying gas under pressure to the chamber and thence to the induction pipe, together with air separately admitted into the same pipe, the gas and air being controlled by valves actuated by the engine suction. In one form, Fig. 1, the gas nozzles 2 is flat-topped and is regulated by a vulcanite block 5 on a lever 3 pivoted in cone-pointed bearings 4. The lever is held by an adjustable spring 6 in contact with a lever 8 controlled by a diaphragm or a piston 11, the upper side of which is open to the atmosphere by small vent holes 13. Screwed into the gas chamber 1 is a T-piece 14, 16 connected to the engine. The passage 14 is regulated by means of a screw 15, and an automatic air-inlet valve 17 is carried by a spring arm 18, against which bears an adjustable spring 20. The valve 17 also serves for the relief of back pressure. In a modification, Fig. 3, the air is supplied by a tube 24, fitted axially in the gas chamber 1 and having a number of valves 21 controlling air inlets of different sizes and opening successively. A threaded ring 28 adjusts the outlet from the gas chamber. The lever 8 is pivoted on the lever 3 and bears against a fixed bracket 27. One of the Provisional Specifications states that the, air-inlet valve may be a butterfly throttle; the gas nozzle is controlled by a flat valve on which bears the diaphragm-controlled lever, the valve being connected to its seat by a piece of wire or other means for preventing rotation, and air may be admitted to the gas chamber by a flap valve on the lever which controls the gas valve, the diaphragm being dispensed with. Another of the Provisional Specifications states that the piston controlling the valve levers may work in a tapered recess, in order to admit more air around its edges under strong suction.
