A fluid-operated chuck of the type having a plurality of radially displaceable jaws 3 slidably mounted in the chuck body 2 comprises an axially displaceable double-acting piston 4 concentrically located in the body 2 to which is attached an actuating member 10 provided with splines 14 obliquely orientated to the axis of the chuck and which engage complementary splines 12 on the jaw bases 13 whereby axial movement of the piston 4 causes radial movement of the jaws 3. The admission of the pressure fluid to the chuck is by a key member 20 connected to a supply pipe 32, the fluid is admitted to the respective chambers 6 or 7 alternatively via passages 21, 22 or 25, 27, 28 which incorporate respectively non-return valves 23, 29 and whereby the admission and retention of the pressure fluid from the key 20 to one side of the piston effects venting of the chamber on the opposite side of the piston. The pressure fluid may alternatively be supplied from a distributer ring 34 secured to the chuck body or through the central bore 33 of the chuck.
