Abstract

1,176,632. Two-electrolyte cells. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 11 Jan., 1968 [17 Jan., 1967], No. 1694/68. Heading H1B. An electric cell comprises anodic and cathodic half-cells separated by a proton-permeable membrane, the anodic half-cell supplying protons to the cathodic one which comprises an electrical conductor immersed in an electrolytic consisting of an aqueous acid solution of cupric chloride containing additional chloride ions and in contact with oxidant fluid. The anode halfcell may comprise an electrode immersed in an electrolyte containing an oxidizable fuel. The cathalyte is preferably cupric chloride in hydrochloric acid. Fuel may be supplied to the anode. In Examples (1), the anode half-cell is Pb/H 2 SO 4 , the cathode is Ta and is supplied with 0 2 , (2) the cathode is carbon supplied with air, (3) the anode is tantalum screen carrying a catalyst comprising an oxysulphide of molybdenum, the anolyte is H 2 SO 4 containing formaldehyde as fuel, the membrane is a sulphonated perfluorohydrocarbon polymer and the cathode is as in Example 2, (4) the anode is as in Example 3, the anolyte is HC1 containing formaldehyde and the cathode is a graphite disc masked on one side with non-conductive material, (5) the anode is Pt in H 2 SO 4 connected to an external power source, the cathode is graphite and the oxidant is air or Cl 2 , (6) the anode half-cell is a calomel electrode, the cathode is graphite and the oxidant, air, 0 2 or H 2 O 2 .
