Abstract

1,176,594. Buoyant cables. MANDREL INDUSTRIES Inc. 17 July, 1968 [10 Aug., 1967], No. 34067/68. Heading H1A. [Also in Division H4] A hydrophone cable or cable section for seismic exploration comprises an elongate body 14 of cellular material, a strain member 16 extending through the body, a seismic wave detector 21 in a cavity 20 in the exterior surface of the body, a waterproof jacket 26 enclosing the body but spaced from it, buoyancy fluid 28 in the space between the jacket and body, and a further waterproof jacket 25 for protecting the detector 21, the cellular material being such as to provide buoyancy even in the event of loss of fluid 28. In the embodiment shown, member .16 is surrounded by waterproof sheath 17, by electrical conductors 18 linking a number of crystal detectors 21 in the cable section, and by a further waterproof sheath 19. If jacket 26 should be damaged in use, sheaths 25, 19 and 17 protect the detector, conductors and strain member from any salt water leaking into the cable section. The sheaths and jacket may be of PVC, cellular body 14 may be of foamed polyurethane, and the buoyancy fluid 28 may be kerosene.
