A parking meter adapted to be operated by coins of three denominations comprises a coin carriage 310 receiving a coin in an appropriate slot 401-403, a fixed gauge plate 307 having a stepped aperture, a handle 383 rotatable to move the coin carriage over the gauge plate whereby a coin therein slides over the aperture until dropping through into a coin box, a coin follower 311 movable by engagement of a coin in the carriage with a corresponding finger 411-413 on the follower to adjust the position of a cam 353, and a two-part coupling controlled by the cam 353 to transmit device from the handle 383 to a pointer 361. The coin carriage 310 is H-shaped in crosssection and has a depending flange co-operating with a cam 317 on a shaft 346 rotatable by handle 383. The coin follower has fingers 411- 413 extending into the aperture in gauge plate 307. The fingers are spaced varying amounts from their corresponding coin slots 401-403 whereby the distances moved by the coin follower are proportional to the value of the coin inserted. A gauge plate in the meter housing ensures that the coin enters the correct coin slot 401-403. The coin follower pivots a two-armed lever 309 to move a bar 358 rearwardly which carries the cam 353 having a stepped surface, Fig. 6 (not shown). The two-part coupling consists of gears 333 and 351, the gear 333 carrying a pivoted pawl 341 and being rotated by a handle 383 through a lever 337 fast with shaft 336. A pin 345 on gear 333 engages aperture 344 in the lever 337 to provide a lost motion coupling. The pawl may be held clear of the gear 351 through part of its journey by cam 353. Drive is transmitted from gear 351 through shaft 354, pinions 350, shaft 347 and pinion 348 to the pointer 361. Rotation of gear 333 winds up a clockwork mechanism through gear 360. The coin carriage is slotted at 406 to engage a pin 407 on a flag 369. The latter is raised during movement of the handle 383 to display instructions on use. The gear 461 fast with pointer 361 carries a pin engaging a notch in a flag 368 to raise the latter when the hiring time has expired. The pointer is reset to zero on initial movement of the handle by means of a cam on shaft 346 co-operating with a two-armed lever on shaft 347 engaging a lug on gear 461. A stop (416) on cam (417) engages a lug on the coin follower to prevent operation of the meter in the absence of a coin, Fig. 4 (not shown).
