Abstract

1,176,081. Grinding. OERLIKON-BUHRLE HOLDING Ltd. 1 Feb., 1967 [1 Feb., 1966], No. 4963/67. Heading B3D. A method of bringing a first non-rotating gearwheel 17 into engagement with a second non- rotating gear-wheel 18 for a lapping operation comprises pressing the first gear-wheel against the second and, in the event of mutual contact between the tips of the teeth, simultaneously turning the first gear-wheel in relation to the second until a tooth in one gear-wheel engages a gap in the other gear-wheel, the second gearwheel, during turning of the first, being braked against rotation. In apparatus for carrying out the method, the first gear-wheel 17 is mounted on a spindle 13 in a slide 11 movable along ways 12, the spindle being rotatable during the lapping operation by a belt drive 15 from a motor 16. The movement of the slide is effected by a fluid supplied to chambers 28, 29 on opposite sides of a piston 22 fixed to the bed of the machine, the supply being controlled by a valve 24 which is movable by a solenoid 25 and co-operates with a movable stop 39. The stop is carried by a slide 34 adjustable by a lead screw 37 and is movable relative to the slide 34 by a screw 40 driven by an inching motor 43. For effecting the turning of the first gear-wheel 17 during the movement into contact with the second gear-wheel if the tips of the teeth contact, a friction lining 51 on a pivoted lever 50 is pressed into contact with a pulley 76 on the spindle 13 carrying the belt-drive pulley 14 and the lever is rocked about a pivot 52 so as to impart rotation to the first gear sufficient for the teeth thereof to engage the gap between those of the second gear-wheel by fluid pressure applied to cylinders 58, 69. During the turning of the first gear-wheel 17 by the movement of lever 50, the second gear-wheel 18 is held against rotation by a pad 84 which is moved into contact with a drum 81 upon actuation of a solenoid 86. In operation, with the gears 17, 18 to be lapped fixed to their spindles, the solenoid 25 is energized to move valve 24 so the slide 71 is moved at a rapid speed to the right until the valve abuts stop 39 and is moved to stop movement of the slide. The movement of the valve actuates a limit switch to start the inching motor 43 and move the stop 39 to the right, the valve 24 and slide 11 following the movement of the stop. If the tips of the teeth of the gears engage, the movement of the slide is stopped, the valve above following the movement of the stop until a further limit switch is actuated to simultaneously energize solenoids 73 and 86, solenoid 73 moving a valve 74 so that fluid pressure is supplied to the cylinders 58, 69 to rock lever 50 and cause the friction lining to rotate the gear 17 a sufficient distance for its teeth to engage the gaps between the teeth in gear 18 and solenoid 86 applying the brake pad 84 to prevent rotation of gear 18.
