Abstract
1,176,046. TiO2 microspheres. W. R. GRACE & CO. 29 Nov., 1967 [19 Dec., 1966], No. 54408/67. Heading C1N. TiO2 microspheres are produced by treating small TiO2 particles of size 0À01-0À1 Á in a mineral acid, strong organic acid, or base, agglomerating the particles into microspheres of size 1-500 Á, drying, if necessary, and calcining the microspheres. Agglomeration may be effected by ageing the particles with agitation in the acid or base for 5 mins.-3 hrs. then separating and drying, or by spray drying a slurry of the particles in the acid or base. The acid may be H2SO4, HCl, HNO3, or acetic acid, and the base may be NH4OH, NaOH, or KOH. The small particles may be commercial TiO2 or may be obtained by mixing Ti oxysulphate solution with NH4OH, ageing at 100‹ C. to peptize, and spray drying. Calcination may be effected at 400-600‹ C. The product has a BET surface area of 30-250 m<2>/gm, density of 0À8-1 g/cc., and pore volume of 0À25-0À65 cc./gm.
