Abstract

1,175,588. Milking stalls. GASCOIGNES (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. 31 July, 1968 [1 Aug., 1967], No. 35382/67. Heading A1M. A milking installation comprising a circular rotatable platform 2 having a plurality of stalls 4 each housing a cow while it is milked, and power means for rotation of the platform 2 during milking, is characterised by the length of each stall 4 being disposed substantially along the periphery of the platform 2, so that cows enter and leave the stalls 4 by passing over the outer periphery, milking equipment being provided in each stall 4. The platform 2 is supported on wheels 9 running on a monorail 10, being driven by a motor and gearbox unit 73, co-operating with a rack 75 around the platform 2; an annular cat walk 11 is provided for the operator, and a circular dung gutter (15) below the stalls 4. Each cow from a segmental holding yard, Fig. 3 (not shown) enters a stall 4 through a passageway 12. Its udder is washed automatically with clean water from a spray (29), Fig. 6 (not shown) operated e.g. by a photo-electric cell arrangement, and a teat cup cluster (38), Fig. 9 (not shown) is then applied by the operator, feed being supplied to a manger (32) Fig, 7 (not shown) from a stationary metering hopper (33) provided in a central enclosure 3; a collar (35), bearing a tuned circuit unit which co-operates with an oscillator unit (34) provided on each stall 4, may be fitted to each cow for identification, to allow a required good quantity to be dispensed. Milking is performed by conventional equipment provided in each stall 4, a valve (45) shutting off vacuum from the cluster (38) after a predetermined time so that the cluster (38) falls from the udder automatically, being then sterilized by being drawn through a series of baths (51)- (53), Fig. 10 (not shown). The milking cycle completed, cows leave the platform 2 through a passageway 13 provided with an automatic gate (62), Fig. 14 (not shown), means (72) such as a flashing light, electrified probe or water jet inducing the cow to leave promptly. Final sterilization of the milking equipment is performed by sucking hot water through the system via the teat cups, immersed in the bath (52).
