Abstract
1,175,527. Steel/synthetic resin laminate; razor blades. WILKINSON SWORD Ltd. 7 Feb., 1967 [30 June, 1966], No. 29322/66. Headings B4B and B5N. [Also in Division B2] A razor blade has on and/or adjacent its cutting edge a coating of, or containing, a polymer and/or copolymer of tetra-fluorothi-irane. The copolymer may be of tetra-fluorothi-irane with tetra-fluoro-ethylene. The polymer and/or copolymer may be deposited, e.g. as a powder, dispersion or solution, by dipping or spraying, on the blade which is thereafter heated to cause the polymer and/or copolymer to adhere thereto. The dispersion may be formed in a solvent, after which the solvent is replaced by a more volatile solvent having a boiling point below 150‹ C. A liquid having a boiling point of volatile solvent not less than 150‹ C. may be applied to the blade before or after the dispersion is deposited. The coated blade is heated in a reducing or inert atmosphere or in vacuo to a temperature above the melting point of the polymer. The coating may be applied by frictional transfer from a stropping disc having a surface of, or loaded with, the polymer, by direct bonding, e.g. by adhesion or hot rolling of a thin foil of polymer, or by polymerization of the monomer in situ or by gaseous deposition of the polymer. A subbing layer of a polymer or vinyltriethoxysilane or lauric acid may be interposed between the metal surface and the polymer coating, or the metal surface may be pretreated or rendered porous, e.g. by etching, metal plating by spraying, evaporation or by electrolysis, or by heating in a gaseous atmosphere. The blade may be of stainless or carbon steel.
