Abstract

1,175,407. Control of D.C. motors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 20 March, 1968 [21 April, 1967], No. 18444/67. Heading H2J. [Also in Division G3] A D.C. motor coupled to a reel of flexible material is controlled during a first period by varying the armature current in dependence upon the diameter of the coil and a desired tension in the material while keeping the field constant, and thereafter by varying the armature current according to the linear speed of and the desired tension in the material while varying the field to keep the back e.m.f. substantially constant. The armature current is measured at 14 and is compared with a reference at 13 to control a static converter or Ward-Leonard generator 3 supplying the armature 1. Two reference signals are produced and whichever is the greater is selected by a discriminator 14a. The first, which is effective up to full-speed at full field, is the product of T representing desired strip tension and a signal R representing the actual radius of the coil, which is deduced from measurements of the reel speed v and the strip speed f. The second reference is effective during field control and is the product of T and f. The signal T may be modified by a signal FS which is a function of reel speed to represent the effect of friction and windage, and also by an " extra torque signal " produced by multiplying an " accelerating signal " AS by a signal INS representing the inertia of the system, from a unit 23 responsive to the computed radius R. The product Tf may be modified by units 19 and 25 which introduce a value X representative of the slight change in back e.m. while it is held nominally constant. The back e.m. is measured at 6 and is shaped by a unit 9 to control a field amplifier 12 which has a feedback loop through a regulator 10.
