Abstract
1,174,478. Hydrocyclones. N. A. L. WIKDAHL. 31 Oct., 1967, No. 49506/67. Heading B2P. Low density impurities are separated from fibrous material by feeding a suspension of the impure fibrous material to a hydrocyclone under such operating conditions that a light fraction and a heavy fraction are obtained, the proportion of separated low density impurities in the light fraction being greater than that of the fibrous material in that same fraction. The process is applicable to the purification of paper pulp wherein a minor light fraction contains most of the shives and a small proportion of fibrous material and a major heavy fraction contains the bark and a major portion of the fibrous material. In Fig. 1, the suspension of impure fibrous material is fed at C to a hydrocyclone I from which the light fraction is successively passed through hydrocyolones 2, 3 for further separation. The heavy fractions from the various stages are fed to a common outlet D. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the light fraction from the first cyclone is further separated in two more hydrocyclones in series as in Fig. I, but the heavy fractions from the second and third stages are recirculated to the first and second stages respectively, the heavy fraction from the first stage being discharged separately. In Fig. 3, the light fraction from a first hydrocyclone 7 is passed to a second hydrocyclone 9 from which the heavy fraction is recirculated to the hydrocyclone 7. The heavy fraction from 7 is passed to a hydrocyclone 8 from which the light fraction is recirculated to 7. Fig. 4 (not shown) discloses another arrangement comprising five hydrocyclones. Experimental results are given.
