Abstract
1,174,209. Monocarboxylic acids. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 24 June, 1968, No. 29937/68. Heading C2C. Monocarboxylic acids are prepared in the liquid phase from branched-chain mono-olefins, carbon monoxide and water by a continuous process which comprises the steps: (a) introducing into a reactor branched-chain monoolefins, carbon monoxide, an excess of water relative to the stoichiometric amount and hydrogen fluoride and intimately mixing them; (b) separating the liquid reactor contents by fractionation into gaseous hydrogen fluoride which is taken off as an overhead fraction and a crude reaction product comprising monocarboxylic acids, hydrogen fluoride and water, which product is obtained as a bottom fraction; (c) cooling the overhead fraction and recycling reliquefied hydrogen fluoride to the reactor in step (a); (d) recovering from the crude reaction product monocarboxylic acids and aqueous hydrogen fluoride; and (e) recycling at least part of the said aqueous hydrogen fluoride to the reactor in step (a). The mono-olefins may be introduced into the reactor in a dilute form by using a diluent e.g. a liquid, saturated hydrocarbon. An example is given of the preparation of pivalic acid from isobutylene.
