Abstract

1,174,117. Forming flat wrinkle-free webs. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 23 Jan., 1967, No. 3341/67. Heading B5B. Flat wrinkle-free webs are formed from extruded unoriented or oriented thermoplastic tube by longitudinally slitting the tube, while in inflated form, into a plurality of webs, separately passing each of the webs under tension and out of contact with each other around alternate sides of a series of adjacent rolls separated from each other by a distance greater than the thickness of the web passing therearound and concurrently heating each of the webs as it passes around the rolls to a temperature in a range extending from the heat distortion temperature of the material at 66 p.s.i. to 60‹ C. thereabove. Specified web materials include polymethacrylate, polyolefins, polystyrene polyethers and polysulphones. The web may be oriented before passage on alternate sides of the axes of the adjacent rolls, longitudinally stretched as it passes around the rollers. A plurality of webs may be passed separately on alternate sides of the axes of adjacent rolls to flatten the webs. The tube may be bisoriented before being slit, either passing directly from extrusion to biorientation or from extrusion over a mandrel of larger periphery than of the tube while being cooled to a self-sustaining condition before being. slit.
