In a process for separating hydrocarbon groups from hydrocarbon mixtures, molecular sieves are used which contain proton acceptor metal compounds. Such compounds include oxides and hydroxides of Na, K, Li, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba and/or Zn and may be present in an amount of 0.001% to 10% by weight. The process may be used to isolate normal paraffins from petroleum distillates, the normal paraffins being preferentially adsorbed and subsequently desorbed with steam. 5A and 13X sieves are in examples.
