Abstract

1,173,201. Embossing wood. R. LETRUD. 6 Feb., 1967 [7 Feb., 1966], No. 5578/67. Heading B6J. A pattern is produced on the surface of a laminate by submitting the laminate to local compressions affecting at least two layers thereof to produce depressions corresponding to a predetermined pattern and then moistening the laminate to cause the locally compressed fibres to swell and form a relief pattern on the upper surface of the laminate. A laminated wood board 1 comprising fibrous layer a (e.g. plywood), semi-hard fibreboard layer b, and hard fibreboard layer c is subjected to a pattern of depressions 2 (e.g. by stamping) to depress layer a and partially depress layer b. The top layer I<SP>1</SP> is then removed (e.g. by sawing, planing or mill-cutting) to bring the bottoms 4 of the depressions approximately into alignment with the new board surface 1<SP>11</SP>. The board is then moistened (e.g. with saturated steam or boiling water) to cause compressed layer 5 to swell into relief 5<SP>1</SP>. The relief may be treated with glue or a thermosetting plastics material. The layers of the laminate may be of different colours and/or textures. In a further embodiment the removal of layer 1<SP>1</SP> is omitted and the top surface of the laminate is planed after swelling to remove a major part of the depth of relief produced by swelling.
