Abstract

1,173,089. Esters of primary alcohols. BP CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 16 April, 1968 [b June, 1967], No. 26075/67. Heading C2C. Esters of primary alcohols are prepared from a primary alcohol contaminated with secondary and/or tertiary alcohols by feeding the primary alcohol and a substantially equimolar quantity of carboxylic acid to a reaction vessel containing the said acid and an esterification catalyst, removing the ester product and water formed by distillation and maintaining an anhydrous composition in the reaction vessel. Some of the ester removed may be recycled to the top of the distillation column to complete the removal of water from the system. If the water content of the water-ester azeotrope is high some of the water may be refluxed to assist ester removal. An example illustrates the process as applied to the production of n-propyl acetate from acetic acid and n-propanol contaminated with sec-butanol using sulphuric acid as a catalyst.
